Analysis

The departments of Boyacá and Cundinamarca (as well as the outskirts of Bogotá) will be the venue for the 2020 Tour Colombia, reaching its 3rd edition as the greatest exponent of the unmatched quality of Colombian riders as part of the biggest squads in the WorldTour.

The imposing altitud the entire race will take place in will be, at least for the foreign riders -all of them forced to spend weeks in the country to get used to those conditions-, the biggest difficulty in an event otherwise quite generous when it comes to route profiles. The sprinters could have big chances to succeed most days, though the usual racing style in Colombia, always on the offensive, could still make for a very exciting race.

Three stages will be key for the overall contenders. A 16.7km team time trial will be opening the race in Tunja (Tuesday 11th), with the small climb of Las Acacias, 2km at 3.5% average, as main obstacle. Three days later, on Friday 14th, a lumpy finish will be tackled in Santa Rosa de Viterbo, over the Alto Malterias (Cat-3) just 3km from the end. Finally, the Queen, crucial stage on Sunday 16th will take the riders to nearly 3,300 meters above sea level at El Once / Alto Verjón (Cat-2), 9.5km at 5.6%, an ascent preceded by the Alto Patios (Cat-3; 3km, 7%).
